Gustavo Machado Seminar + Pics
Gustavo Machado seminar was great! The turn-out was huge, thanks to the support from our mma/bjj community. In both the gi and no-gi sessions, Gustavo shared many handy techniques that he had personally used, effectively, in his own competitions. It was a very beneficial and enjoyable afternoon for all of us who attended.

CONGRATS TO OUR NEW PURPLE AND BLUE!
Kreation is proud to announce that Scott Calver and Joe-Jitsu had been promoted to purple and blue belts respectively, by Cristiano!
Prior to them getting their new belts, Scott and Joe were tricked into participating in a class game, which had them remove their old belts, got blindfolded and had to search for their belts across the mats, and continued to grapple blindfolded. Upon removing the blindfolds, they discovered new belts around their waists. It must have been Sul's idea.
A huge congratulation to Scott and Joe-Jitsu as they begin their next phase of journey!

All The Best, Paul!
This week, Kreation bids goodbye to Paul, a very valuable member of the club, as he returns to Indonesia with his family.
In the fond words of Kon:
"As some of you know already, Paul will be leaving us soon and returning to the indonesian haven of Bali. He has been such a welcomed addition to our ranks since day one that it would be hard to imagine him not there beside us on the mats anymore. I think I can speak on behalf of everyone here in saying that his enthusiasm and dedication to the sport is unparalleled and in the short time he has been here with us, he has made tremendous progress in his game. Paul - please keep training hard and don't forget to stay in touch wherever you're at!
So lets take this opportunity to wish him good luck, good bye and all the best for the future."
We trust that Paul will continue in his pursuit of Jiu-Jitsu in Bali and we wish him all the best! You will be missed, buddy. :)

NEW PURPLE AND BLUE BELTS!
Congratulation to Sulaiman and Justin for their well-deserved promotions to purple and blue belt respectively by Cristiano!
Justin, whom Cristiano fondly referred to as a Pitbull, had to go through the gauntlet - rolling with everyone present in class. Kon, being the last man in the gauntlet, finished the fight humourously by tying Justin's legs together with the new blue belt.
An eventful and joyous Saturday class was rounded up with some group photo taking.

Kon awarded purple belt by John Will!
Kon was awarded his purple belt by John Will on 27 April, Sunday.
It was a momentuous event, for Kon, and for us. It is a long over-due achievement, as Kon has demonstrated a level of Jiu-Jitsu way above his blue belt and a tremendous teaching ability to boot.
Congratulations, Kon! Well-deserved and loooooooooooong over-dueeeeeeeeeeeee!
John Will has a write-up of appreciation of Kon and his recent visit to Singapore on his blog. It gives a glimpse into the person that is Kon. Read it here.

HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE!
- 4 golds!
- Most Technical Fighter
Both Aziz and Melvynna competed in last weekend's 2008 Pan Asian Brazilian Jiu-Jistu International in Manila, representing Budo Academy and Kreation Jiu-Jitsu.
Besides sweeping all the womens categories she participated in (Gi; weight class and absolute and No Gi; Weight class and Absolute) and returning to Singapore with 4 gold medals, Mel was also awarded the Technical Fighter of the tournament. It is the highest award of the event with only one given out each time.
And this is the FIRST TIME it has been awarded to a female.
Only 1 of her fights went full time and was decided on points (she was down 3 points in the last 10 secs, but did a take down and went to full mount to win!), and 1 fight ended in submission inside of 15 secs.
We are certain both Aziz and Mel have also gained valuable experience in the tournament.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Black Belt In Our Midst!!
BLACK BELT IN OUR MIDST!!!
For over the last 3 months, Cristiano José Carvalho, a native Brazilian black belt relocated here for work, has been a great addition to our family.
We are very excited to be training with him as he is warm, easygoing and approachable. He has a vast knowledge and experience in the art which he willingly and freely shares.
Apart from imparting Jiu-Jitsu, Cristiano had also promised to teach us Portuguese.
Boa vinda, Cristiano!

Scott Calver is back!
Welcome back, Scott!
Scott had spent a considerable time in jiu-jitsu and judo, both as a student and active competitor.
We have missed Scott over the years when he was relocated to Bangkok for work. Whilst there, he trained under Adam Kayoom. Now that he's back in Singapore, we are so pleased to have him in the club again.
Alright Scott, start spilling the beans on the secrets of your tom yam jiu-jitsu! :)
A picture of Scott (courtesy of Luke, bjj-asia.com) with Andre Galvao in the latter's recent seminar in Hong Kong.
Luke has also written a very good article on training partners, in dedication to Scott. Worth a read!

John B Will Seminar & Dinner
John Will seminar has come and gone. Once again, John Will has proven to be one of the best coaches anyone can have the privilege to learn under.
Besides delivering a well-planned and awesome seminar, John Will also gave us encouragement and specific advice on our Jiu-Jitsu pursuit. Without a doubt, everybody walked away with new insights and renewed enthusiasm for the art.
Keeping up with tradition, we had dinner with John Will. This is another cherished highlight of the evening. Many life long stories were shared over pizzas, steak and beer.
Thanks to Kon for organising yet another great seminar, as he's been doing over the years.
(photos of the dinner will be uploaded soon)

kudos and congrats!
Kudos to our Kreation members who competed in the recent grappling tournament held on 30 March, Sunday. Commendable fighting spirit to step up and represent Team Kreation and The Budo Academy. and CONGRATULATIONS to the winners! Our team was represented by 5 competitors (Sulaiman, Aziz, Hongjie, Sherwin and Rayner) and walked away with the following medals:
- Sulaiman was placed 1st in the Blue belt openweight gi event.
- Aziz was placed 1st in the white belt under 77kg bjj gi event
- Aziz was also placed 1st runner-up in under 77 no gi grappling.
- Sherwin was placed 2nd runner-up in the white belt under 88kg bjj gi event.
- Hongjie was placed 2nd runner-up in the white belt under 77kg bjj gi event.

*****
Personally, as a spectator and one of the fellow Kreation members who were there to lend moral support to our fighting team mates, the event is filled with many highlights for me:
- Sul's and Aziz's outstanding performances.
- Hongjie bouncing from a loss and finishing his next fight in 6 seconds.
- Rayner pulling off an armbar after trailing by points. The fight is not over till it's over. :P
- Cristiano and Vicknesh speaking up for Aziz over a questionable foul committed against Aziz.
some thoughts:
It was interesting for me to witness not only the grappling standards of the people who participated, but also the different manners in which people conduct themselves, on and off the mats.
The event has also been a good day of bonding for our team.
Thanks to:
- those who took footage/pictures of the fights,
- those who bought beer for one another,
- those who kept track of time and scores for the fighters, and
- those who cheered and lent a voice louder than thunder when the situation called for it.
It's a shame Sherwin popped his shoulder and will have to stay off the mat for a while. Speedy recovery dude!
Our pursuit of the art doesn't end in one tournament.
Let's continue to train hard.
cheerios!

KJJ BBQ
Last saturday after class, a bunch of us adjourned to Steve's place for an impromptu bbq. It was a relaxing time of getting together and chatting away while munching on hotdogs, chips, and gulping down some beer.
